We will be camping at River Expeditions and whitewater rafting the Lower New River in Hico, WV. The trip is about a 6 hour expedition of Clas II – V (mild – wild) whitewater rafting and pools for breaks in the action. This experience features moderate to difficult rapids as a high volume of water constricts through the narrow gorge strewn with giant boulders. You’ll encounter huge holes, roller coaster waves and house-size rocks plus extras like “Jump Rock”, “Swimmer’s Rapid” and even ‘surfing’… West Virginia style!
Rafts hold 8 people. At the Wakka, we discriminate. So here’s your chance to create a killer team, one that will put all other teams to shame. If don’t have a team yet, create one (message me on Facebook) and find the finest 7 people to join. If you do have a team, when registering, select the team you’re joining.
Chances are, you don’t live in West Virginia. So it’s up to you to get yourself down there. I don’t care how you get there, just safely. I’ve provided the location that you must arrive. You can arrive anytime after 12pm on Friday, August 31st, 2012. From there claim your camping grounds, setup your tent and let the festivities begin. Check out the packing essentials that’ll make your trip more awesome.
From Friday to Monday we will be camping. Yes, real camping. No electricity, no running water. Setup your tent and be ready to be outside just about all weekend. There are clean bathrooms and showers for the needy. There’s also a pool, hot tub and bar for the luxurious.
We will be rafting on Saturday around 10am. I’ll provide more details as it gets closer to the event. When rafting I don’t really care what you wear, but it’s recommended to wear a bathing suit and water shoes. Breakfast will be served before we go rafting. Midway through the rafting trip we’ll stop on the riverside for lunch. After rafting we feast like barbarians.
Imagine your body is accelerated to 60 mph within a few seconds. Immediately afterwards you are slowed down to 0 mph within 0.7 seconds at a braking distance of 3.5 meters. When jumping from great heights the body is subjected to forces similar to those of a moderately severe accident, only a really well-trained body is able to cope with and resist these forces.
Many questions have arised about the cliff diving or in our case, cliff jumping. I felt that it deserve to be recognized and notified about the safety and dangers of this experience. I do not encourage or insist that everyone jump off of cliffs, because of the high dangers. Since we will be in the mountains of West Virginia there are many cliffs that you may find to jump. Particularly last year we found a location to jump. There are a couple points that people have jumped, ranging from 20-70 feet. In the following context I will further investigate the dangers and safety of jumping.
I want everyone on this trip to have a safe and enjoyable trip. That is my biggest concern. Cliff jumping is EXTREMELY dangerous and should only be taken with careful precaution. Jumping from 20 feet is fairly safe, 50 feet could break bones, and 80 feet could KILL you! Since there is a cliff that is about 70 feet high, this height is very dangerous. I do not encourage anyone to jump from this height. There is also another cliff we can jump off of at about 25 feet. I suggest that everyone jumps from the smaller one, for safety. If you are jumping off of any cliffs regardless of height, please take and observe these tips very carefully.
1. DO NOT JUMP OFF OF ANY CLIFFS INTOXICATED!
2. DO NOT DIVE!
3. FROM HIGH HEIGHTS JUMP WITH ARMS TO YOUR SIDE AND LEGS POINTING DOWN (PENCIL DIVE)!
4. DO NOT FORCE/PUSH/SHOVE/RUSH ANYONE OFF OF ANY CLIFFS!
5. BE SAFE!
Prior to jumping make sure that there is no debri in the water where you are jumping. It may be good to check out the circumstances first, before jumping. The water is about 30-40 feet deep at the point of many jumps. Many common injuries of cliff jumping include severe bruises from the impact of hitting the water on an odd angle. There are many accounts of broken backs from simply entering the water wrong.
In all, it can be fun, here’s a fun video of our buddy Glen making the plunge.
There will be a one-game elimination pong tournament.
—
There will be a trophy for the winning team of this great achievement.
—
There will be unrivaled bragging rights.
This tournament will be played like a March Madness tournament. We don’t know how big the tournament will be just yet. This will all be determined by the number of people that register for The Wakka. Once we know, the bracket will be drawn out and randomly selected teams will be created. Official Wakka Pong Tournament rules are also in the works. Much more details to this madness coming soon.
